According to foreign media reports, Baker School plans to expand its photon and laser projects through the National Science Foundation funded laboratories in Jackson and Auburn Hills campuses.
Currently, two-year degree programs to train qualified photonics, laser and fiber optic technicians are available only at the College's Flint campus. The college said the project was established in 2013 with a grant of $ 200,000 from the National Science Foundation and the first and only one in the state.
The College plans to use the $ 512,000 advanced technology education program grant at Auburn Hills and Jackson in June 2020 to build the partnership program and its facilities. The new lab will be equipped with a range of lasers and specialized equipment similar to the photonics industry, such as robotic equipment for use with lasers.
Dr. Anca Sala, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, said: "Photonics has a lot to do with optics, such as lasers and fibers, which have applications in many fields and are also used in advanced manufacturing as many companies in the automotive industry use Laser cutting and welding; and lasers are ubiquitous, from the medical field to laser tattoos, to the military. "
The project currently has 30 students. As the project expands to the Auburn Hills and Jackson campuses, Sala said it hopes to add 60 to 90 students to each campus project.
Baker College also plans to spend some money to establish information sharing programs with the community. The goal is to help students join the photonics industry by working with public school science teachers, adding photonics to their curriculum, setting up a career education program, or conducting industry seminars.
Sala said: "This project lasted only two years, does not include the intense mathematics like other four-year projects, it is more like the application of laser and optical applications, which is a great job and career "
According to the National Center for Photonics and Photonics Education, the starting salary for a two-year photonics course graduates ranges from $ 40,000 to $ 50,000.
The U.S. Office estimates that roughly 17,100 photonics, laser and fiber optic technicians will be required nationwide between 2014 and 2024, with an annual demand of about 1,710. However, the current two-year project can only provide qualified graduates of less than 400 per year.
