Since Electrolux Group recently acquired General Electric's home appliance business, General Electric lost hundreds of patents for home appliances, but its partner Quirky continues to achieve results in the home appliance industry. This week, the two companies announced a series of new smart home products, including seven new sensors. General Electric and Quirky are promoting simple, convenient and affordable smart homes. All new product work will be combined with Quirky's application, which allows users to easily access and control the devices connected to them.
Mass production of custom high-tech sounds like a daunting task, but Quirky relies on its upcoming "microfactory" facility in San Francisco to solve the task. The facility will be equipped with a plastic injection molding production line, an automated circuit board assembly machine and a 3D printer. The focus is on producing smart home electronics products on an order basis. The survey found that 83% of respondents considered smart home technology, but prices are still a major obstacle. Smart homes are still regarded as luxury items rather than necessities. It remains to be seen whether the efforts of General Electric and Quirky can change this view.
