The U.S. government is about to release the fuel economy regulations for car companies in 2025

According to the “Detroit News” report, the US government will soon issue final fuel economy regulations that will increase fuel economy requirements to 54.5 miles per gallon (about 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers) by 2025.

Ray LaHood, US Transportation Minister, said in an interview on Friday that the new regulations will be issued soon and the U.S. government regards this as a landmark achievement and will not give up.

In order to achieve higher standards of average enterprise fuel economy, the US auto industry will spend about $157.3 billion, but the cost of consumers at the gas station will save $1.7 trillion. The government expects that the average price of cars will increase by 2,000 U.S. dollars by 2025 due to the implementation of new regulations.

Last summer, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the California Air Resources Committee held a private meeting with major automakers to reach agreement on fuel regulations for 2017-2025. According to the agreement, the agencies agreed to conduct a review in mid-plan to ensure the feasibility of the plan in the final years.

Last year, the U.S. government reached an agreement with 13 major automakers on the fuel efficiency standards of 2025, including the Big Three Detroit, Toyota, Honda and Nissan. The only auto companies that refused to sign the agreement were Volkswagen and Daimler. It is expected that the final rules will be basically in line with the provisions of the agreement last year.
