In the airbag test, there are problems in data manipulation and tampering. In the quality inspection process, Takata engineers deliberately removed some test data to obtain an "ideal" test report. The audit results will affect Honda's judgment on whether to recall the Takada airbag. In addition, Takata is afraid to take more responsibility and pay more compensation in the recall.
China Economic News, Bloomberg quoted Takata's "problem airbag" joint investigation team's conclusion that there are data manipulation and tampering problems in airbag testing. In the quality inspection process, Takata engineers deliberately removed some test data to achieve "ideal" Test report.
The chairman of the joint investigation team, Brian O'Neill, was hired by Honda and Takada, and former chairman of the O'Neill Expressway Safety Association. The results of the first public survey showed that by manually removing some test data, the airbag inflation and safety curve were not real, which laid the groundwork for the Takada problem airbag. It even caused the largest car recall in the “global history”.
O'Neill and his team are currently only auditing Takata's situation in the US. The next phase of the audit will investigate the Takata airbags used in the global market. Because of the large amount of data, it is expected that the complete audit process will take 3-4 months.
"We have discovered the problems in the data, and engineers selectively select the data," O'Neill said. The test results of Takada's airbag expansion device have "the problem of retaining only better test results", and the detailed investigation results are expected to be officially announced in a few months.
Honda spokesman Chris Martin pointed out in an interview that the O'Neill team's audit results will affect Honda's judgment on whether to recall the Takada airbag. At the same time, it is said that the new Honda and Acura brand cars currently under development will not install the airbag air pump supplied by Takada.
Takada spokesman Jared Lewe said in an interview: "Tada has admitted that the airbag air pump test data has been tampered with and manipulated, and regrets this behavior. This is contrary to Takada's engineering operation standards. The whole incident is not forgiven. ."
A former Takada engineer named Kevin Fitzgerald said that in 2005, when he supplied an air pump for a Nissan model, he witnessed Gao Tian engineers making artificial modifications to the test data, Kevin Fitzgerald. He left the company in Takata in 2014.
The results of the joint investigation will affect the responsibility of Takada and the OEMs for the recall. If tampering and manipulation data is more damaging, Takada may have to take more responsibility and pay more compensation in the recall.
Not only that, but the results of the survey may also have a potential impact on the “acquisition”. Currently, Takada and its M&A advisory companies are working hard to find buyers. According to sources close to the top, Takata has contacted as many as 20 potential buyers, and does not rule out joint acquisitions by private equity partners, auto parts suppliers or a number of companies.
In the hot and humid environment, the Takata problem airbags may overreact and even cause an explosion when they are ejected. At present, 13 people have died and more than 100 people have been injured worldwide. At present, the recalled auto companies involve more than a dozen companies including Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.
However, it is surprising that Takada’s 2016 fiscal year (April 2015 to March 2016) financial report shows that during the reporting period, the company’s operating income still increased by 11.7% year-on-year, totaling 718 billion yen. The operating income of the three main business belts, airbags and steering wheels increased.
