The replacement of sedan shipments is expected to increase by 0.1% this year to 206.8 million, while light truck tire shipments in the aftermarket will drop by 0.2% to 28.6 million. Although these figures do not seem particularly optimistic, they do indicate that there has been an improvement in the shipments forecast by the industry organization in April.

At the time, RMA forecasted that the number of replacement tires for passenger cars and light trucks would decline slightly year-on-year. In 2014, the total shipments of the two were 205.3 million and 28.5 million. The demand for replacing medium truck tires is expected to increase by 3.8% to 18.1 million compared to 2014. This is also an increase compared to the 17.8 million predicted earlier.

Regarding the original tires, RMA expects a significant increase in the production of passenger cars and medium/ heavy truck tires, but the demand for light trucks' original tires will decline.

The association said that shipments of original passenger car tires will increase by 4% to 49.7 million, and shipments of original truck tires will increase by 10.5% to 6.3 million, both of which will have a certain degree of growth compared with April’s forecast. In contrast, light truck tire shipments to automakers will drop by 2.4% to 4.5 million, which is in stark contrast to April, when RMA expects a slight increase in light truck tire shipments.

RMA estimates that in 2015, total US tire shipments will reach 314 million, an increase of 1.1% from the previous year.
