Foreigners in China: Visiting Yanglei Feng in the Global Village of Yangshuo

In Yangshuo County, a tourist resort in the world, there is a group of volunteers who are intimately called “Yanglei Feng” by Chinese and foreign tourists and local residents. They are all dressed in blue vests and hats and are active in the “Global Village” West Street to provide foreign tourists with volunteer service.

On the 9th of March, next to the police room at the west exit of Yangshuo, the reporter saw Sam and his companions who were guiding several “foreigners”.

“Yangshuo’s popularity is getting higher and higher, especially in foreign countries. But when foreigners come here to travel, there will be communication problems, especially in language and cultural differences.” Sam from New Zealand lived in Yangshuo for 8 years. He stated that he was very happy to help these foreign tourists.

According to statistics, Yangshuo receives an average of 300,000 foreign tourists each year. Every day, foreign tourists visiting the West Street range from 30,000 to 10,000. In order to better serve and manage inbound tourists, in February 2011, the Yangshuo County Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry Administration Brigade invited 16 foreigners who lived in West Street and formed a “Foreigner Volunteer Service Team”. From the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Germany, Belgium and other countries.

The head of the Yangshuo County Public Security Bureau's Entry-Exit Management Brigade, Bin Min, introduced that foreign volunteers use their language advantages to help foreign tourists register their accommodation, publicize relevant policies, regulations, and security precautions, and assist the police in mediating and handling foreign-related incidents and cases. We will strengthen the coordination of the affairs of foreigners who live and travel in Yangshuo.

“Yangshuo has made me feel very good. The people are very kind. The police also provide help. I have made many friends here. I am very happy to help them,” said Steven Wen from Australia.

Because he likes Chinese kung fu and Chinese traditional culture, in 2001, Steven came to Yangshuo to study Tai Chi. At present, he has opened a hotel in the village of Shipianqiao, Yangshuo. Because there is no fixed service time for volunteer activities, in addition to regularly attending the “Attendance” on the street, Steven will drive his electric when there is a need for help from West Street. The tricycle came in time. "If I get lost in one place, if someone can help me, it will make me very happy."

Volunteer Ying Ford is the liaison officer of the British Consulate-General in Guangzhou in Yangshuo. He is also a "male-born son-in-law." In 2005, he married a local girl in Yangshuo and is now living for a long time. Ford Ford told reporters that he had more contacts with volunteers in Britain who had encountered difficulties in Yangshuo. "I'm helping my hometown people in my second hometown. It's very interesting."

Nowadays, more and more Chinese and foreign tourists have come to know this group of volunteers wearing blue vests. Some of them will also actively find them for help. Sam said that every time he can give people help, such as telling them how to take a bus, where the mall is, pointing the way, etc., it makes him feel very happy and feel that every day they do, everything they do makes sense.
